Spring to Summer May 2022 Texas Fly Fishing report

The Brazos river bass bite has been awesome. Lots of willing Largemouth and Spotted bass on topwater and ripping around bigger baitfish patterns on intermediate and 3 second sink tips. Also plenty of sight fishing opportunities on common carp and freshwater drum now through the fall. Recent rains gave us a nice push of water and the fishing is great lets go. Its a great time for a multi day float and some river tent camping.

North Texas Lakes- the bass bite has been decent really good. Still catching crappie shallow as well and running into schools of whites back on the lakes. Carp having been spawning and plentiful in the shallows but most are willing to eat. Gar are scattered about as well and when they arent in full spawning mode they are very willing to eat.

Lake Conroe- Bass are done spawning and getting back into their regular habits. Topwater and streamer fishing have been decent with some sight fishing on sand but most are in the vegetation or working the “stumps”. Bowfin have been cruising but with all the water its been tough in alot of the spots. We get shots most trips though and the days its good, its really good. Best day so far is 7 over 4 lbs. Redears are on beds now and soon the bluegill will follow making for some great light fly rod fun.

Things you should ask me about if your interested for the upcoming days and months- North Texas(DFW)- multi day float trips\ Sight fishing bowfin, carp or drum on local lakes and rivers/Bass on the Brazos Houston area- sightfishing bowfin and Gar/Spotted bass in the creeks/Fishing Swamps/Bass on Lakes

Effective flies lately- Boogle bugs and hair bugs/bead chain and small lead eye crawfish patterns in olive or black/popper dropper rigs with a small minnow or nymph/Carp booger for carp but keep an eye out for cottonwood seed sippers
